Vivek Chhetri, TT, Darjeeling, July 7: The Gorkha Janmukti Morcha has claimed that it received an email from Trident Global HKK Limited, saying it is planning to take over the management of three tea gardens run by the Alchemist Group in the Darjeeling hills.
However, the Trident group, whose details are unknown, said it should be allowed to trim the work force by 30 per cent and clear wage dues in 18 to 24 instalments.
Sujit Bhattacharya, the CEO of Alchemist Group run by Trinamul Congress MP K.D. Singh, said the Trident group was interested in the gardens’ takeover and discussions were going on.
The Morcha-affiliated union rejected the conditions set by the Trident group.
The Alchemist Group owns three gardens, Kalej Valley, Dooteriah and Peshok, in the hills which have over 2,500 workers.
Suraj Subba, the general secretary of the Morcha union, said the Alchemist gardens had salary dues to the tune of about 1.72 crore.
Giri said: “If there are any negotiations on the garden, it has to be through the Darjeeling district magistrate.”
Anurag Srivastava, DM, Darjeeling, said: “I am not aware of any proposal and if there are any, they should communicate to us officially.”
