TT, Malda, Aug. 11: A farmer accused of allegedly raping his 19-year-old daughter-in-law, along with four of his friends, last week was arrested yesterday following the woman’s police complaint.
The four others named by the homemaker are absconding, police said.
According to the police, the woman had not spoken about the incident that took place on August 5 out of fear. Later, she spoke to her parents and yesterday, lodged the complaint naming five persons, including her father-in-law.
Suku Sheikh, 48, was produced in the chief judicial magistrate’s court today and remanded in judicial custody for 14 days.
“The woman got married three months back to a 25-year-old man. Since then, she has been staying with her husband and in-laws,” a police source said.
She has told the police that her mother-in-law used to take her husband to Malda Medical College and Hospital for treatment often. On those days, only she and her father-in-law would be at home and he would behave in an obscene way.
On August 5, the woman’s mother-in-law took her husband to a hospital in Behrampore.
According to the woman, Sheikh dragged her out of the house and took her to a bamboo grove nearby. There she was repeatedly gang raped by Sheikh and four of his friends, Anthony Sheikh, Rabi Sheikh, Jenarul Sheikh and Najrul Sheikh.
“The woman was tortured several times after that,” a police source said.
She lay half-conscious throughout the night. “In the morning, the woman managed to return to the house and later, went to her father’s house, 3km away. Finding her injured, the woman’s parents took her to a local health centre where she was treated. After that, she told her parents about the incident,” the police source said.
The woman, who was in the court here today, said: Since then, my father-in-law and his friends have been calling me on my mobilephone and issuing death threats. But I want them to be punished. I lodged a police complain around 2.30pm on Wednesday, along with medical reports from the health centre.”
The woman’s mother-in-law who returned home with her son from Behrampore on August 6, has not commented on the matter. Sources said she came to know about the incident from the neighbours.
Malda police superintendent Arnab Ghosh said Sheikh has been booked under Sections 376 D (gang rape) and 323 (voluntarily causing hurt) of the IPC. “Suku Sheikh has been arrested and the police are looking for the other accused,” Ghosh said.
